Andrew Ellicott was a surveyor and mathematician; he was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1785. From the guide to the Astronomical journal, 1797-1801, 1797-1801, (American Philosophical Society) Ellicott (1754-1820) was a surveyor and matematician. He explored the Mississippi River Valley and the southern boundaries of the United States. The Clarke Historical Library has two books by Ellicott and microfilm of his papers which are housed in other institutions....

Stephen Duncan was a planter and banker of Natchez, Mississippi. The Duncan family plantations included L'Argent, Auburn, Camperdown, Carlisle, Duncan, Duncannon, Duncansby, Ellisle, Homochitto, Middlesex, Oakley, Rescue, Reserve, and Attakapas Plantation. Abijah Hunt, a native of New Jersey, formed a business partnership with his brothers Jeremiah and Jess Hunt, and Elijah Smith. He came to Natchez in 1798 as a sutler, or licensed merchant, for the United States Army stationed along the lower Mississippi River.
